Conventional Air Launched Cruise Missile System Studies.

Aerosystems International (AeI) has been selected by MoD as one of two prime contractors undertaking concept studies of CALCM systems able to fulfil part of the UK MoD's Future Offensive Air System (FOAS) requirement, ST(A)425.

AeI is teamed with Aerostructures Hamble Ltd, Frazer-Nash Consultancy Ltd, and Flight Refuelling Ltd to undertake these studies. Phase I studies started in November 1997 and Phase II studies will be complete by July 1999. Within the team each member has specific responsibilities:-

  • AeI is prime contractor responsible for overall systems integration and performance, and design authority for the avionics sub-system definition, design, and performance aspects.
  • AHL is design authority for the aircraft launch platform definition, structure, aircraft systems and performance aspects.
  • FNC is design authority for the ground and aircraft missile handling sub-systems definition, design, and performance aspects.

FRL is design authority for the missile launcher sub-system definition, design, and performance aspects. The objectives of the studies are to provide:-

  • A comprehensive Combined Operational Effectiveness and Investment Appraisal (COEIA) data set to support the MoD FOAS COEIA in late 1999.
  • System definition and performance parameters that will allow technology demonstration or system prototype programmes to be formulated by MoD, and undertaken at a future date.

The scope of the studies includes a wide range of military and civil launch platforms, avionics, missile handling and launcher concepts and related technologies.

A number of weapon options are also being considered for carriage and launch by the CALCM system. CONTACTS For further information about this project please contact

"On behalf of the entire Boeing C-17 team, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for supporting our efforts in securing the lease of four aircraft to the Royal Air Force(RAF). This is a significant victory, made possible in large part because of your work on our behalf, and we believe it paves the way for additional such programs in other countries. It is the benchmark and our collective performance will be watched closely around the world."

Vice President-General Manager, Airlift & Tanker Programs, Boeing.
